Sauna

Is it good to use steam rooms and saunas when you have Cystic Fibrosis?

I joined a health club that has these steam rooms and saunas and I have Cystic Fibrosis, I was just wondering if they're good to use with my condition and for how long at a time? I'm 15

  1. I wouldnt do it...its kind of like how ppl w/CF aren't supposed to go in hot tubs either. The hot,wet steam grows bacteria that grow well in hot, wet places like the lungs, so the kinds of bacteria in there (like pseudomonas) aren't good to be around.
  2. I use them all the time. And I am 26 with CF. They usually say you shouldn't stay in one for too long anyways Prolly not more than 15 minutes at a time and be sure to have something salty for when you get out. As you know we sweat WAY more salt and if you aren't able to cover the salt you lose then your at a higher risk of becoming dehydrated. Mostly I would talk to your CF clinic though. Usually you can just call them and ask if its fine and what precautions to take.
  3. it isn't recommended as the first poster says, due to the amount of bacteria living in them but obviously steam is good for the lungs
