Special light bulbs for steam rooms and saunas?

This is at a local gym which I am the lifeguard for. The incandescents we currently use are constantly burning out. And when they do they are actually exploding and leaving the filaments exposed, making them a pain in the butt to change. I think the ones we currently have are sixty watts. Do flourescents work better in hot environments? Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks.

  1. Your problem is probably not the lamps, but the fixtures. Consensation falling on the hot glass will shatter lamps in the manner you describe. While the proper solution is to install fixtures properly designed for that environment, a cheaper ad hoc solution might be to try CFL lamps. They're not rated for damp environments either, but seem to be well enclosed, and operate at lower tempertures, and thus will not be prone to shatter if the glass gets wet. Whatever you do, be very careful around those damp, mis-applied fixtures. be sure power is off before you try to re-lamp them.
